Planning a Kitchen or Bathroom Remodel? Start With This Plumbing Checklist

When should a plumber get involved in a kitchen or bathroom remodel? Bring the plumber into the project before fixture locations are finalized and before walls or floors are closed. Early planning helps connect the design to the home's water supply, drainage, hot water needs, and construction schedule.

For North Georgia homeowners, the right starting point is a list of what will stay, what will move, and what will be added. A new faucet in the same place is a different project from relocating a shower or adding a bathroom in previously unfinished space.

1. Mark the fixtures that will move

Identify the proposed locations of sinks, toilets, showers, tubs, laundry equipment, and kitchen appliances. Share sketches, existing plans, and fixture specifications with the contractor and plumber. Explain whether you want to keep the current layout or are still comparing options.

A fixture's position affects more than its visible connections. Water supply, drain routing, venting, and access all need consideration. Do not assume a nearby wall or floor cavity can accommodate every proposed change.

2. Describe existing problems before demolition

Write down recurring slow drains, weak flow, leaks, and hot water complaints. Even if the finished room will look entirely different, those symptoms help the plumber understand the existing system.

Ask which conditions can be evaluated before work begins and which may remain uncertain until concealed areas are opened. A clear scope should distinguish planned work from decisions that depend on discoveries during construction.

3. Review supply and drainage together

New fixtures need both a suitable water supply and a workable drainage arrangement. Discuss accessible older piping, shutoff locations, new connections, and any planned replacement. The goal is to define what the renovation needs rather than automatically replacing every pipe in the house.

Projects involving several rooms or an addition may benefit from a whole-house plumbing plan. Dan's also discusses drain and sewer project work and water supply improvements when those are part of the renovation.

4. Match hot water planning to the new use

An added shower, a different tub, or more simultaneous use should prompt a review of hot water needs. Share fixture information and expected occupancy before selecting replacement equipment. Keeping the existing water heater may be practical, but that decision should be made with the proposed use in mind.

If replacement or relocation is under consideration, include water heater planning in the project scope. Related electrical or gas work may require coordination with other qualified professionals.

5. Agree on the construction sequence

  • Who finalizes the fixture specifications and layout?
  • Who confirms applicable permit and inspection requirements?
  • When will framing and access be ready for plumbing work?
  • Which work must be checked before walls or floors are closed?
  • Who handles changes discovered after demolition?
  • When should fixtures be available for final installation?

Permit requirements depend on the location and scope. Confirm responsibilities with the contractor and the appropriate local authority rather than assuming every remodel follows the same process.

Remodel plumbing questions

Is keeping fixtures in the same place always cheaper?

It can reduce relocation work, but existing conditions, access, and the selected fixtures still affect the scope and estimate.

Should I buy all the fixtures first?

Share the specifications before ordering so compatibility, dimensions, and installation requirements can be reviewed.
